An installation, designed and delivered by Stan’s Cafe Theatre Company was presented at Gallery Oldham by the Festival Partnership for three weeks in September. Stan’s Café uses grains of rice to bring the world of human statistics to life. 1 grain of rice = 1 person and you are invited to compare the grain that is you to the tonne of rice which is everyone else in the UK.

Each day a team of performers weighed out rice to represent different population statistics. These statistics became a shifting sculptural landscape and their combinations told shocking, celebratory, witty, thought provoking and deeply moving stories.Volunteer Performers were recruited to perform with members of Stan’s Café, interact with the visitors, gather statistics and weigh out the rice. Volunteers developed in their roles through engaging with workshop participants, maintaining the installation and assisting Stan’s Café in developing themes and narratives.
